Today I would like to highlight a wonderful business that is helping girls and women heal and overcome a life of forced prostitution. Freeset is located in Sonagacchi, which is the largest sex district in Kolkata, India. Within a few square miles more than 10,000 women stand in line, waiting for one of the thousands of men who visit daily to choose their services. Many are trafficked from Bangladesh, Nepal, and rural India. Others sell their bodies out of desperation to feed their kids.
Kerry and Annie Hilton moved into the district from New Zealand in 1999, not realizing until night time that their neighbours were exploited girls and women. They started the business, in which these women make jute bags and T-shirts, as a way to help them start new lives.
The women are paid twice the going rate for an equivalent job elsewhere, and also receive health insurance and a pension plan.
Here is a sneak-peek at some of their products, which you can custom order:
If you are looking to have bags or T-shirts custom made (with your own logos etc) for an event, a school, team, or organization, ordering through Freeset would be a great way to support victims of sex trafficking. You should also know that Freeset uses 100% organic and fair trade materials for their items.
Check out their website for stories of hope and a list of their products. Happy shopping!
