Although extreme poverty and the lack of law enforcement are mainly to blame for child sex trafficking in Cambodia, I think the Cambodian people's casual attitudes toward sexual predation also contribute to the problem. Cambodians generally look up to foreigners, especially Westerners, as wealthy and benevolent. It's unfortunate that some foreigners are in the country to take advantage of children.

YES! Saskia that is exactly it...the "less glamorous side" of the movement...but the one that is SO important! I think at the core, prevention is my heart. Thank you for your comments, I know they come attached to so much experience and insight.

Thanks Ellie! No book on the horizon yet, but maybe someday! I think it is good to reflect on things like this. I still have many thoughts in me but they aren't quite ready to be expressed coherently.

Thank you so much for this post Michelle, it gives a lot to think about, and it sounds like a significant event you attended. These issues are so complex but I think that you touched on a key point, "where was all this help when I was a child?" I was recently in Eastern Europe and spoke with those working on transition programs for orphans leaving government institutions, and all I could think about was that this was the less glamorous side of the anti-trafficking movement. Being there, creating opportunities and building strong communities before exploitation occurs... often underestimated but so key to fighting this thing.

Good question Meredith! I just updated the post! :) Bill C-310 will be debated at Third Reading on April 27, 2012 at 1:30pm. After the hour of debate, Bill C-310 will be adopted if it has unanimous consent. If it does not have unanimous consent at the end of the hour of debate, a recorded vote will be held on May 2, 2012. So for that one, instead of sending in petitions, you can just contact your M and ask them to vote in favour:) The others you can still send in petitions for:)

So glad to hear I am not alone in feeling this way! Thanks for your comments ladies. I think we need to remind and encourage each other to just take one more step forward at a time. I know for me, too much pressure makes me give up, whereas encouragement makes me push myself to see how far I can go. Julia, in the GTA there are definitely people who are interested in this. I would recommend attending an anti-trafficking event in the GTA to get connected with people in the area. One is the Your Lucky Day at the end of the month (second event advertised in this post: http://hopeforthesold.com/upcoming-abolitionist-events-in-ontario/) They might be sold out but worth a try. You can also get connected via fb groups like this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/123252981098217/ and this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/186492024706676/.

The last vote on this bill was April 4th and the NDP supported the bill--in fact it was unanimous. Here’s the record of the vote:

http://www.parl.gc.ca/HouseChamberBusiness/ChamberVoteDetail.aspx?FltrParl=41&FltrSes=1&Vote=181&Language=E&Mode=1

The NDP continue to be in support of this bill.

At Love Movement, we have a faith-based curriculum that includes a letter writing campaign that is designed to help in the effort to see Bill C-310 receive continued support and reach royal assent.

united in love,

I absolutely loved this article by Michelle Brock. I feel as though she was speaking to me- a person too overwhelmed by the idea of solving the WHOLE issue, that I simply resort to doing nothing (or wishing changed would happen). I have felt the need to get involved with the fight to end sex trafficking for a while now, but don't know how to go about getting involved. Any tips or advice? Is there a community of people in Toronto/GTA who get together to try and stop human trafficking that I could become a part of?

Any help would be appreciated!
